Frequently Asked Questions

At Kindred Home Equity, we believe understanding brings freedom. Many people share the same questions about reverse mortgages, so we’ve compiled some straightforward answers to help you and your family feel informed and at ease.

Who is Kindred Home Equity, and why was it created?

Kindred Home Equity is an Australian reverse mortgage lender founded to help retirees unlock their home’s value without having to sell or move out. We founded Kindred Home Equity because we observed many older Australians who were “asset rich but cash poor” and needed a solution to enhance their retirement. Our mission is simple: give Aussie seniors a way to stay in the home they love and enjoy a more comfortable life. Kindred Home Equity was created to empower you to use the equity in your home on your terms, with a team that truly understands and respects what your home means to you.

Will a reverse mortgage affect my pension or government benefits?

Although obtaining a reverse mortgage doesn’t automatically affect your Age Pension or other government benefits, it may affect your pension or other government benefits. Because it’s a loan and not income, it usually won’t change your pension payments — unless you take a large lump sum and keep it as savings. Many retirees choose to draw smaller amounts as needed, which often has little or no impact. You can contact Centrelink or a financial adviser about how your pension or government benefits may be affected before deciding how to use the funds.

Can I still sell or move house if I take out a reverse mortgage?

Yes, you stay in full control. You can sell your home whenever you choose. When you sell, the reverse mortgage is simply repaid from the sale proceeds, and the remaining balance is yours to keep. If you decide to move, you may also be able to transfer your reverse mortgage to a new property, depending on the lender’s criteria. There are no penalties for selling early, so you always have the freedom to change your plans if life takes a new direction.
